Salon Privé 2017: An Alfa steals Ferrari’s show
With classic cars, you can have it all: running around a junkyard searching for parts one moment, and then enjoying a warm welcome at a high-class boutique dealership the next. London’s Salon Privé is a fine example of the latter, offering an exceptional overview of the world of luxury cars, from long ago right up to the present day. It uses the palaces of Britain’s capital to showcase some of the planet’s most fascinating cars, and the Chubb Insurance Concours is a regular highlight of the event. The Concours of Elegance is held on the same weekend, so the fact that both events provide such a high-caliber selection of cars speaks volumes for the strength of the British classic car scene.
The Salon Privé 2017 Concours showcased a range of Ferraris in its special “Concours Masters” section to mark the iconic Italian car manufacturer’s 70th anniversary. The line-up was absolutely remarkable. Classic car aficionados could enjoy sightings of early Ferrari masterpieces including a 1953 250 Mille Miglia Vignale, a 1956 TR and a 1957 TRC, both bodied by Scaglietti, as well as a 1961 250 GT SWB California Spider – another of Scaglietti’s works of art. A 1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider won the People´s Choice Award, while the 250 GT SWB California Spider came second in “Best of Show” and won the “Riviera Cruising” class.
The overall winner however was a stunning 1960 Alfa Romeo 3000 CM “Superflow” with a special aerodynamic body built by Pininfarina. As well as Best in Show, this beauty also won the “Curvaceous Coupés of the ‘50s and ‘60s” class. Other class winners at the Concours of Salon Privé 2017 were: a 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Series 1, a 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental, a 1967 Lamborghini Miura P400ANT, a Shelby 427 Cobra, and a Horch 853A Sport Cabriolet.
Among the cars awarded special prizes was an Aston Martin DB6 MkII, hailed as the most original post-war car. Interestingly enough, this car, with its characteristic yellow paint-job, had already been shown at Masterpieces 2017. The question is, did the owners once again drive the car all the way to the Concours as they did at Schloss Dyck a couple of weeks before?
